Comprehensive Guide to Amazon FBA Product Labeling
Selling products via Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) gives your brand access to millions of Prime customers, reliable two-day shipping, and automated warehouse fulfillment. However, Amazon fulfillment centers (FCs) operate under robotic high-speed scanning systems. If your incoming shipment arrives with unreadable, missing, or misformatted barcode stickers, Amazon will place your inventory into "Stranded Status," charge unplanned prep service fees, or return the pallet at your expense.
FNSKU vs. UPC vs. ASIN: Understanding Amazon Barcode Architecture
New Amazon sellers frequently confuse the three distinct identifiers used within the marketplace ecosystem:
- ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number): A 10-character alphanumeric catalog identifier (e.g.,
B08N5WRWNW) assigned by Amazon to identify a specific product listing page. Multiple sellers can sell under the same ASIN. - UPC / EAN (Manufacturer Barcode): The standard 12-digit UPC or 13-digit EAN purchased from GS1. If you enable "commingled inventory" (manufacturer barcode tracking), Amazon uses the UPC on your package. However, your units are mixed with identical units sent by other third-party sellers, creating severe counterfeit risk.
- FNSKU (Fulfillment Network SKU): Begins with
X00.... This barcode connects the physical inventory unit exclusively to your specific seller account. When a customer orders from your storefront, Amazon picks and ships the exact unit you prepped, eliminating commingling and protecting your seller feedback score.
Official Amazon Packaging & Label Specifications
Amazon's Fulfillment Inventory Operational Manual specifies exact criteria for physical product stickers:
- Label Dimensions: Must measure between 1 x 2 inches (25.4 x 50.8 mm) and 2 x 3 inches (50.8 x 76.2 mm). The most widely used industry standard is the 30-up Avery 5160 template (2.625 x 1.0 inch) or 4x6 thermal rolls.
- Required Content: The label must display: (a) the Code 128 barcode, (b) the alphanumeric FNSKU code underneath the bars, (c) a descriptive title matching your listing, and (d) the condition of the unit (such as "New").
- Completely Cover Existing Barcodes: You must cover any manufacturer UPC, EAN, or ISBN barcodes printed on the outer box. Having two scannable barcodes visible on the package causes automated conveyor sorting lasers to divert the package to an exception lane.
- Removable Adhesive: Labels must adhere firmly during transit and warehouse handling, yet be removable by the end consumer without damaging the product packaging.
Printer Setup: Thermal Printers vs. Laser Sheets
For high-volume operations, a dedicated direct thermal printer (such as a Rollo, Zebra ZP450, or Munbyn) is the gold standard. Thermal printers use heat rather than ink cartridges, eliminating toner smudges. When using thermal rolls, select 4x6 inch Thermal Label in our generator above. If using a home office laser or inkjet printer, select the 30-up Sheet layout and use Avery 5160 / 8160 sheets. Always print a single test sheet on plain paper first and hold it up to a light against your sticker sheet to verify alignment before printing on expensive adhesive stock.
